Grab a martini, let's demystify menopause.
Today’s Topic: Get Your Mammogram and Buy that Cute Dress!
How Being Intentional with Your Fashion Leads to Better Self-Care and Confidence
Happy New Year!
Hey girlfriend, what are you wearing today? Did you consider that what you’re wearing may have a direct impact on how you face the world and how you feel about yourself?
2017 was both exhausting and exhilarating for most of us. The emails and notes I have received from many of you tell me that you are ready for a year of less stress and more fun. (Me too, sister!) Does the thought of kicking this year off with a spruce-up of your wardrobe sound like a daunting task? I encourage you to think again! Dressing with intention can be an expressive, important element of self-care, especially as our bodies begin changing. (NOTE: Women’s health isn’t just about mammogram reminders, ladies)
Meet Debra Herring
One of my dear friends, Debra Herring, happens to be an expert on women’s fashion. Debra is the straight-talking best friend you need when you want to make a fantastic first impression. She and her team at Debra Herring Studio offer clothing and accessories that celebrate the positive features of all women. Every time I walk into this beautiful, boutique clothing store, I immediately feel encouraged to try new things and I always leave with something that makes me feel ready to take on the world!
Debra Herring has a talent for showing off eye-catching, classic pieces, but her styling never feels over the top. Her fashion-forward sense of style is an inspiration for any age, and she proves that comfort with personal style is the chicest thing of all. If the goal is to feel great, look great, and be true to our own sense of style, what could this fellow tribes-woman in the clothing industry offer us?
“At Debra Herring Studio, we want women to be proud of their bodies and we want them to celebrate their personal sense of style. At the same time, we don’t shy away from addressing common concerns that women have when dressing for their bodies.” says Debra, “Clothing should be our friend as we age. Like makeup, it should accentuate our positives and camouflage our negatives.”
Yes. This is what we need, right? Women’s Health = Self Care = Accentuating our Positives!
I asked Debra what she would recommend that every woman should have in their closets.
Girl, did she have some answers.
Perfectly Tailored Jacket
A well-made blazer is a transformative object. It dresses up your denim, polishes your party dress, and — with the right fit — streamlines your silhouette.
Last year, the denim industry was over one billion dollars in sales worldwide. Ladies, denim is here to stay. You are never too old to wear denim jeans. Wearing denim is a fantastic way to update your look. Choose from colored denim, capris, leggings, cuffed capris, straight leg, boot cut, or distressed denim; which will be a huge fashion YES this year. A pair of well-fitting jeans is a godsend and once you’ve found them, you’ll never let them go. Debra recommends having two or three different styles of jeans in your wardrobe for varying occasions and levels of comfort. Spend some time finding jeans that fit right and feel good, and you won’t be sorry.
Leggings + Tunics
Leggings work for most every body type as does their natural bedfellow, tunics. Comfortable and versatile, they’re great for most any occasion. Just be sure to wear a top that covers your bottom and always remember the golden rule: leggings aren’t pants.
Debra Herring Tip: The 5 best shoes to wear with leggings: ballet flats, loafers, sandals, ankle boots, or knee boots.
The Party Dress of Your Dreams
Keep an eye out for the dress of your dreams year-round so you’ll be ready when the invitation comes along; or you can always fall back on that famous wardrobe staple, the little black dress.
- It’s okay to choose solid colors and bold styles.
- Choose classic shapes that drape instead of cling.
- Wrap dresses can be very flattering. If you find the neckline is too revealing, wear a lacy cami underneath.
- Invest in quality clothing and tailored clothes that will flatter your figure. You should opt for quality because you will find better fabrics, better cuts, and therefore, better fits.
A Shout Out to Shapewear
“I always remind my clients to stock up on the best shapewear,” says Debra, ”Selecting the right undergarments for your body type is a must. From a slenderizing bodysuit to your go-to pair of Spanx, take advantage of the power of great shapewear.”
Fashion faux pas, anyone?
I asked Debra what she thought were some common style mistakes. “I have three things I always tell my customers who ask: choose the right accessories, spend some time really knowing how to dress for your shape, and avoid baggy clothes. These three things will help a woman begin to really focus her style.”
Find a Fashion Advocate
As I left Debra Herring Studio, I got a sense that whatever your age, the basis of style is an understanding of not only who you are but also the kind of image you want to project. If you are a woman living in the Northwest, Debra Herring Studio can definitely be an advocate to add to your fashion arsenal. For those of you in other cities - ask your friends where they shop, google it, research the places in your town that can help you. There are great, locally-owned small businesses in every city that are just waiting to support you!
I encourage you to think about what this means for you and your personal sense of style. What makes you feel good?
Does how you dress project who you really are to the world?
You deserve the time to make sure that answer is yes.
